Providing Education and Nutrition to Children in Uganda

Victory Nursery and Primary School is located in rural Uganda on the edge of the famous Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, home of the endangered mountain gorillas. When we first visited the school in 2011 we were shocked at what we saw. The children’s uniforms were in tatters, their classrooms and other facilities were in disrepair and they weren’t receiving adequate nutrition. Students spent many hours a week repairing their classrooms with plastic bottles and mud. Despite this, we saw the potential for the school to become a sustainable project that could have a positive impact on the wider community.

Thanks to generous support of our donors, Sustain for Life has undertook the construction of two new classroom blocks, a kitchen and toilets and initiated a vegetable garden which is now thriving with the support of the children, staff and community members. Students and staff now learn valuable lessons in sustainable organic agriculture which they can share with their own families and communities. Where possible to cut costs and positively engage with the community, we asked the beneficiaries, their families and neighbours to help with construction, farming, cooking and upkeep. The project has been on time and to budget and the school has demonstrated outstanding commitment and transparency.

We are pleased that our friends in the US, The Kamukama Foundation, are supporting the children of Victory Nursery and Primary School through an excellent and comprehensive child sponsorship programme that will greatly improve the quality of education and lives for the children in the area.
