Halfway Home, Kampala, Uganda
In order to provide vulnerable and marginalised youth with a self-sustainable future, Sustain for Life is committed to constructing and operating a halfway home in Kampala, Uganda that will offer shelter, nutrition, education, vocational training and psychological support to help children transition back in to society, learn necessary life and business skills and regain their self-worth.
Offering Vulnerable Youth a Postive Future
Our work will benefit vulnerable and unaccompanied boys and girls who are living on the streets, have been imprisoned in remand homes, are neglected, abandoned or abused. The services will also extend to other categories of disadvantaged youth including those infected and/or affected by HIV/AIDs. Initial beneficiaries of this project will be the children released from Naguru Remand Home in Kampala who have nowhere to go or no family to look after them. These extremely vulnerable children have faced a myriad of obstacles in their short lives and will benefit immensely from a comprehensive programme to help them become successful, self-sufficient adults. Through this project we aim to provide the children with the following:
- A safe, clean and supportive home environment
- Adult companionship and mentoring
- Basic education (general, social, cultural, business and finance, nutrition, etc.) and practical skills for life
- Food – three varied and nutritious meals per day
- Medical support and health education
- Psychological counselling and support
- Tracing and home contact in an attempt to reunite children with their families
- Access to customised vocational training
- Legal advice and access to the justice system
- Community garden and agricultural training
- Recreation and sport
Ultimately, we hope to achieve the following for vulnerable and marginalised youth in Uganda through this project:
- Improve livelihoods and reduce poverty
- Improve health and address issues such as HIV/AIDS prevention and family planning
- Allow greater access to education
- Restore dignity and foster independence
- Inspire a culture of entrepreneurship and hope for the future
- Promote equality for woman and marginalised communities
- Meet or partially meet UN Millennium Development Goals 1, 2, and 3
