Growing a Sustainable Future

Sustain for Life has developed a comprehensive organic agriculture project at two hospitals in southwest Uganda for the purpose of feeding patients and staff and training vulnerable community members, primarily the Batwa pygmies, in sustainable agriculture.

The aim of this project is to provide sufficient nutritious, fresh food to feed both patients and hospital staff, while teaching the Batwa and other marginalised communities important agricultural skills – enabling them to become self-sufficient and self-reliant.
Our aim is to provide a sustainable solution to combat hunger, food insecurity, malnutrition, poverty, and disease and to offer improved livelihoods for beneficiaries of the programme by:

• training communities in sustainable agricultural and low-cost farming technologies
• training beneficiaries and surrounding communities in nutrition, sanitation and income generation
• feeding thousands of hospital patients and staff in rural Uganda

Bwindi Community Hospital and St Francis Hospital Mutolere in Kisoro have each provided over 10 acres of land to be used for the purpose of training and growing vegetables. Over the first three years, this project aims to benefit tens of thousands of patients and staff at the two hospitals and over 1500 Batwa pygmies in the surrounding communities.

Sustain for Life are implementing this project in partnership with Kulika Uganda, a local charity committed to improving the livelihoods of those most in need through community development and education. The core of Kulika’s Community Development Programme is training of farmers in sustainable organic agriculture which focuses on experiential learning, practical work, on-farm experimentation and demonstrations to improve the skills of farmers. We will also work closely with the staff and stakeholders of Bwindi Community and St Francis Hospitals, Batwa leaders, beneficiaries and other members of the community served by this project.
